Active was one of two 120-ton 90-foot schooners built for the Service by J. W. Lynn of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the other being the Resolute. They were among the last strictly sail-powered cutters built for the Service.
The Active was stationed at New Bedford, Massachusetts, during her time of service. She was then sent to New York in 1875 for disposal. She was sold on 14 May 1875.
